Our school board president recently announced during a school board meeting and on Facebook that they are all volunteers. This is true for all board members, except her. As you will see in the Consulting Agreement she has with ACCEL schools, the management company that the board is charged with hiring, she is being paid $40,000 per year, or $3333 per month. Keep in mind that this is more than what the typical new teacher at banning Lewis schools makes, to work every day, for our kids. In her application to join the board, she stated that Deann (another board member) negotiated the details of her required "fees" with Ron Packard, the CEO of Accel. Also keep in mind that the Board president has made almost a quarter of a million dollars in just the last few years from BLRA, the Education Foundation, Accel schools, D49, and even competitor schools (Monument Academy). You can decide for yourself what this means.

I might have to speak up at a board meeting about this, but it will surely put a target on the back of someone I know and love. Anyone with common sense can see how much of a problem this is to have a school board president being paid from our schools. How did the school board not catch this or question it?! I think our teachers and principals deserve to know the full story. I hope the president and Deann who helped her get the contract show some empathy for how this looks and what message it sends. We have so many families with foster kids, with service members deployed, with tight finances, with other situations that deserve to know why the board president can be paid but they have to shell out money for fees, new dress codes every year, no school transportation to ball games, and so much more. Unreal.

You can decide for yourself what this means (the table linked has not been updated with the confirmed amount she is getting from Accel). I’ll tell you what I think it means. It means that she’s not a volunteer like she brags about it meetings and that she has a friend on the board who cuts her deals for her so she don’t look bad. Pretty obvious .

Through publicly searchable financial transparency documents and CORA Open Records requests made of BLRA's custodian of records and board members, the following table shows what AKBZ LLC has been paid by BLRA and its affiliate entities in just the last few years. Currently, the Board President's own application to join the board confirms she is being paid by ACCEL Schools Ms. Zambrano has also taken payment from neighboring and competitor schools for marketing, branding, recruitment, and enrollment services. See the board minutes from 9-30-21 and you will see that the board agreed this WAS a conflict of interest at the time she joined the board, but they WAIVED this eligibility requirement. You can draw your own conclusions here. No one is suggesting that Ms. Zambrano not continue her business of consulting with schools; we are asking her to resign from the board. Full Contract here between ACCEL Schools and Heather Zambrano.

The school board sent to my personal email a document with an email titled " Community Response 5.4.22" - Just a reminder, it's authored by the same people who investigated themselves and found no evidence of any wrongdoing. In this document on page 2, the following statement is made: April 6, 2016 – June 30, 2016: $6500 was paid to Heather Zambrano as a 1099 of BLRA
As it was explained in the document, these payments started immediately when the board incepted the foundation and the person referenced in that quote left the school board as VP to begin work managing the Foundation. Since there are no financial transparency documents (vendor payments) posted on blracademy.org for this time period, this figure was not captured in the table referencing an approximate payout of $220k since 2016. Please update the cumulative tally of payments made to this board member so the community has transparency on where these payments originated and what the total actually is, now appearing to approximate $226,500, much of which appears to have been paid by the foundation and, while in dispute, some paid by ACCEL Schools.
